WHAT IS WRONG
I was not actually happy with the previous result. I realized I was a bit rushed yesterday to test and write the whole topic in one go. And Mixing and Matching Monster Parts without proper planning ends up with "Ugly Monsters"!Probably some monster parts cannot be mixed easily.
I also missed a lot of important things:
- Monster Evolution
- Monster Hierarchy
- Monster Structure
- Monster Trait
WHAT IS RIGHT
It is a good thing to break down the Monster into parts.
For this Monster Factory to work, what really matters is actually the STICK FIGURE (Skin Modifier) that makes the monster parts.
Further refinement is truly optional. And the likeness to Pixar Monster University characters is becoming optional too.
Once we have the setup allowing to Mix and Match and randomize original Monster or Creature, we will have our own 3D base design.
However, remember that with this Skin Modifier forming, we are only thinking about the BASE MESH, far from final result like Pixar MU. The amount of process and details that goes after getting the base form is much more than you probably imagine at first.
Below video is a good watch, something to think about:

Remember that drawing "Stick Figure" should not really be just a "Stick Figure" in Skin Modifier context, because eventually one will use Sculpting and continue to form the shape, adding details, etc. Then go through process of character mesh Retopology (if to be animated).
The cool thing is that Skin Modifier process allowing artist to quickly create character concept and see what works and does not work.
OTHER IDEA: HUMAN BIPED CREATURE FACTORY USING RIGIFY
Based on the study of MU, I think creating Procedural Bi-Ped Human Creature is actually a lot easier than creating a Monster.
However need to consider:
- Gender
- Age
- Body Shapes: Tall, Short, Chubby, Muscular, Skinny, Slim/Normal/Average
- Human Proportion
I think based on Blender Rigify Meta-Rig Armature, we can actually setup a creature factory.
[HUMAN META RIG] + [SKIN MODIFIER]

BACK TO MONSTER UNIVERSITY...
Let's go back to square one and look back into Pixar Wikia reference, but with previous known knowledge:
Some concept arts by Chris Sasaki:
http://sakiteriyaki.blogspot.com.au/2013/06/monsters-university_23.html
Will go through all characters that I could find in this page that I could reference one and more. I am using SKIN MODIFIER to break down every character from Pixar Monster University.
SPECIAL COLOR CODING will be used for creature body parts:
1. Head = red
2. Body = blue
3. Tail = orange
4. Leg = green
5. Horn = yellow
6. Eyes = white
7. Arm = magenta
8. Hand = teal
9. Neck = brown
10. Foot = dark green
Character where body == head, like Mike, is considered as Head Only Character.
001.Archie the Scare Pig
1. Head = narrow, vertical rounded square-ish, similar to Salley
2. Body = horizontal torso, fat, pig-like
3. Tail = 1, pig-like
4. Leg = 6, horse-like
5. Horn = 2, goat ragged horn
6. Eyes = 2
7. Arm = NONE
8. Hand = NONE
UNIQUE DETAILS:
Ears
Pig Nose
Without the Snots, this creature is not a pig, just a dog like creature. What else? The Octopus Eyes that Pixar put on this pig monster. |
002.Art
1. Head = horizontal wide, rounded
2. Body = NONE
3. Tail = NONE
4. Leg = 2, spider-like covered
5. Horn = NONE
6. Eyes = 2
7. Arm = 2
8. Hand = 4 fingers
Art is either Crab or Spider.
UNIQUE DETAILS:
Big Mouth
Furry
Art needs Fur. |
003. Baboso Goretega
1. Head = big head
2. Body = NONE
3. Tail = NONE
4. Leg = NONE
5. Horn = NONE
6. Eyes = 2
7. Arm = 2
8. Hand = simple, no fingers
UNIQUE DETAILS:
Slug like monster.
004. Randall (Randy) Boggs
1. Head = chameleon-like
2. Body = lizard-like
3. Tail = lizard-like
4. Leg = 4
5. Horn = 3 fin like
6. Eyes = 2
7. Arm = 4
8. Hand = 3 fingers, gekko-like
9. Neck =
10. Foot
UNIQUE DETAILS:
Snake, lizard, chameleon
004. Brock Pearson
1. Head = bird like
2. Body = muscular bird like
3. Tail = NONE
4. Leg = 2, bird-like
5. Horn = 2
6. Eyes = 2
7. Arm = 2
8. Hand = 4 fingers
9. Neck = bird like
10. Foot = 3 fingers bird like
UNIQUE DETAILS:
Beak
This is one strange character that I think almost does not belong in Monster University. However, bird monster does exist.
Looks weird without Beak, but it interestingly resembles one of Pixar character from Toy Story. |
005. Brynn Larson
1. Head = bird like
2. Body = NONE
3. Tail = NONE
4. Leg = simple leg
5. Horn = wing horn
6. Eyes = 3
7. Arm = 2
8. Hand = 3 finger nails
9. Neck = NONE
10. Foot = 3 fingers nail
Brynn is a type of really simple Monster character with clever Wings attached on her head that resembles short pig tail hair. This simple design is a type that considered to be Kawaii (cute) in Japan.
006. Carla Delgado
1. Head = Snail Like!
2. Body = Octopus Like
3. Tail = NONE
4. Leg = 4 Tentacles
5. Horn = Wing Like
6. Eyes = 2, snail like with attachment
7. Arm = 2 Tentacles
8. Hand = NONE
9. Neck = Snail Like
10. Foot = NONE
Another interesting character, that is quite cute in design. Apparently SNAIL and OCTOPUS merge well.
This type of character is one that has some variations across other monsters. Slight different head shapes. Eyes positions. More than 2 eyes. Bigger mouth smaller mouth. And so on.
So, if to make monster variations, CRAB, INSECT, and OCTOPUS monsters are good to start with. Octopus is indeed a fascinating creatures. Mike and Sully characters are also type of monsters that can be the base for some other small and big monsters.
This monster reminds me of two Alien in "The Simpsons' and also classic game "Day of Tentacles".
006. The Python Nu Kappa Girls
1. Head = Snail Like!
2. Body = slender human female like
3. Tail = NONE
4. Leg = slender human female like
5. Horn = NONE
6. Eyes = 3
7. Arm = 2 Tentacles
8. Hand = simple
9. Neck = long
10. Foot = long slender human female like
UNIQUE DETAILS:
Beautiful hair!
6 x "cheerleader" type of Monster character where each character is different only in color. Very typical girly characters. However, this character is also very simple and cute. Almost too human, but the Eyes and Mouth, again, classified this character as a monster.
TO BE CONTINUED...
(indeed this will get kind of exhausting, but once we have all kind of Monster Inc based model, we can then start GROUPING and CLASSIFYING THE SPECIES OF MONSTER)
