This is not certainly a new thing, but I have no idea how this escape my radar. There are too many Blender projects out there.
Anyway, this is another tool from Dolf (Entoform) that is available online. The web version of Spacewright allows you to generate 3D Space Ship based on your name or whatever word you put in it.
A quick test using my name. I was amused the first time I use this. |
There is an old article talking about it:
That article must be really old, but still valid. You can buy 3D print of the spaceship directly from the website.
And this is Dolf's Shipwright video reel example:
IMPORT TO BLENDER
If you need to use it inside Blender, apparently you can too, simply import the VRML 3D model into Blender. Blender handles the filetype and convert it to normal 3D geometry mesh.
I tried "Ton Roosendaal". |
TEXTURING THE 3D SPACESHIP
The ship may not have any texture and this will make it looks like a toy ship because it lacks of the detail that good 3D texture will give you. You need to look at ways to make a proper 3D texture for your spaceship. There is a nice trick that you can do to make any 3D object looks a little bit "dirty". Kind of like a quick and easy dirt map.
You simply switch to Vertex Paint mode in Blender, then hit space and select "Dirty Vertex Color". Before you do that, you can of course use the Vertex Paint before hand, maybe project some texture, etc. You simply need to take time to do this.
Obviously, this is not enough, but something you want to use to dirty up the model.
RENDERING IT OUT
Belows are some renders using Blender Render + Freestyle.
We can smooth the model (CTRL+3, just Subdivide) to get a more modern looking ship, which could be what you want or may not want. It might be heavy, but interesting looking.
You can always use HDRI Image Based Lighting for Environment Lightnig and Blender Cycles to have a more realistic render result.
One thing to keep in mind though: although I always tend to always focus on shortcuts, faster ways to do things, in reality to get things looking right will take some time. Need to take consideration of lighting, shadow, additional effects and how it is going to be layeted together in compositing.
Quicky render. |
If you take time to texture the 3D space ship, you will definitely get a decent looking 3D spaceship model. Maybe there is a way to create a nice Procedural Texture to texture this procedural automatic ship creation?
Thanks for this Shipwright tool, Dolf!
