Inspired by director Sylvain Chomet

Welcome to another installment of the KidLit Artists series on inspiration! This time we have Eliza Wheeler here to talk about what inspires her.

Hi all! I've been enjoying learning more about my fellow Kidlit Artists and what inspires them.

For inspiration lately I've returned to the animated film The Triplets of Belleville by Sylvain Chomet (pronounced Sill-vain Show-may).

Chomet's character design and animation is beyond comparison! The film has no dialogue, and compensates with exaggerated scenery, character shapes and movements. Here are some wonderful stills from the film:

About two years ago my husband and I were backpacking in Europe and came across a screening of Sylvain Chomet's newest film,
The Illusionist, in Florence, Italy. The director was there for a Q&A, and since he speaks French they had a translator - unfortunately for us in Italian!

Although we could understand little of what was being said, we were thrilled to experience him in person. Triplets is my favorite work of his, but The Illusionist was still rich with the same scenery and characters Chomet is so well known for.

Here's hoping you find inspiration around every corner!
