I love this technique, because it is so cute, and sooo easy :)   First off, I picked up a FREE vintage frame Clip Art from The Graphics Fairy.  Her site is FABULOUS!

Next, I opened it up in Photoshop and re-sized it to fit in my sidebar.
 I did it at 300px wide, but you may want to do it at a different size depending on how large your sidebar is.

 Now, double-click on your "Background" layer, and click OK.

Then, grab your Magic Wand Tool.

With your Magic Wand Tool, simply click on the center of your frame, to select the white inside the frame.  Then hit the delete key on your keyboard to delete the center of the frame (now it should be transparent inside your frame).

Then, open the image of your choice.

Drag it onto your frame file, and size it down so that it completely covers the transparent area on your frame.

Now Drag your image layer so that it is below your frame layer, like so...

Now it should look something like this, feel free to add text like I have, or not :)

Then, do a File > Save for Web.

I saved mine as a PNG, but you could also save it as a JPEG if you like.

That's it!

Part 1: Get Set up

First thing you will want to do, is to sign up for a free webfonts.fonts.com account.

Once you have an account, you need to go to your "Project" tab, and where it says "Current Project", select "Create Project"

Now you need to add the Project Details, make sure you click "Add" next to your Publish Domain, then Click "Save Project"

Next Click on "Choose fonts".

Here, you can browse through the different kind of fonts available.  **Quick Tip: If you click on "Show free", you won't have to scroll through all the ones that say "Upgrade"

Once you have found one(or more) that you like, Click on "Add to Project".
Now we are going to "Work on style sheet".  We have to add a "Selector", the Selector that you need to add will be different, depending on the Template that you are using, so I have listed below what Selector to add for the different templates.

Minima:   .post h3
Simple:   h3.post-title
Picture Window:   h3.post-title
Awesome Inc:   h3.post-title a
Watermark:   h3.post-title
Ethereal:   h3.post-title a
Travel:   h3.post-title a

**In this sample, I am using the "Awesome Inc." Template, so I am going to use the h3.post-title a

After you type it in, click "Add selector".  Then you need to click on the pink drop-down menu, and select the font that you want (if you only picked one, then it will be the only one that has shown up)
 Once you have selected your font, you need to click on "Save changes and update style sheet".

Now, go to your "Publish" tab, and Click on the tab that says "Option 2: Advanced (JavaScript)".  It should like this:  **if you only picked one font, than there will only be one font-family listed

Now Copy the Text in the First box and go to your Edit HTML page on you blog, and paste it directly after you <head>  **it is right close to the top

Go to your Template Designer.

 and click on Advanced, and Add CSS(for the Minima Template, you can add the code here, or in you Edit HTML page)

Now we need to tell the template which fonts you want where, so below I have a list of different fonts that you can change.  In my tutorial, I am going to change the Post Title, and the Sidebar/Gadget Title. So for my example,  I need to copy the 2 lines below that work for the Awesome Inc.

Minima Template:
     Post Title:    .post h3 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Sidebar/Gadget Title:    h2 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Post and Sidebar/Gadget Main Text:    body { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Header/Title of Blog:    #header h1 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Header Description/Blog Title Description:    #header .description { FONT FAMILY HERE }

Simple Template:
     Post Title:    h3.post-title { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Sidebar/Gadget Title:    h2 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Post and Sidebar/Gadget Main Text:    body { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Header/Title of Blog:    .Header h1 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Header Description/Blog Title Description:    .Header .description { FONT FAMILY HERE }

Picture Window Template:
     Post Title:    h3.post-title { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Sidebar/Gadget Title:    h2 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Post and Sidebar/Gadget Main Text:    body { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Header/Title of Blog:    .Header h1 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Header Description/Blog Title Description:    .Header .description { FONT FAMILY HERE }

Awesome Inc. Template:
     Post Title:    h3.post-title a { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Sidebar/Gadget Title:    h2 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Post and Sidebar/Gadget Main Text:    body { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Header/Title of Blog:    .Header h1 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Header Description/Blog Title Description:    .Header .description { FONT FAMILY HERE }

Watermark Template:
     Post Title:    h3.post-title { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Sidebar/Gadget Title:    h2 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Post and Sidebar/Gadget Main Text:    body { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Header/Title of Blog:    .Header h1 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Header Description/Blog Title Description:    .Header .description { FONT FAMILY HERE }

Ethereal Template:
     Post Title:    h3.post-title { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Sidebar/Gadget Title:    h2 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Post and Sidebar/Gadget Main Text:    body { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Header/Title of Blog:    .Header h1 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Header Description/Blog Title Description:    .Header .description { FONT FAMILY HERE }

Travel Template:
     Post Title:    h3.post-title a { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Sidebar/Gadget Title:    h2 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Post and Sidebar/Gadget Main Text:    body { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Header/Title of Blog:    .Header h1 { FONT FAMILY HERE }
     Header Description/Blog Title Description:    .Header .description { FONT FAMILY HERE }

Paste the ones you want into your Add CSS page, like so...

Then, you need to go back to your Web Fonts account, and Copy the fonts that you want to use.  Make sure to copy the WHOLE line.

Now go back to your Add CSS page, and paste the fonts into the place where it says FONT FAMILY HERE.  Now it should look something like this:

Now just Click on Apply to Blog and you're done!  Now I have a Cute font for my Post Titles, and a different one for my Sidebar Titles.

I am so excited to do this tutorial, it is something that I have thought about for a long time. I wanted to put together a completely custom blog design and show everyone that is ambitious enough how to do it themselves.

So there are TONS of ways to approach a custom blog design, so I just decided to pick one direction and go with it. I am going to take a digital scrapbooking kit and make a custom blog design from that.

Here is a quick list of places that I found to get free digital scrapbooking kits (NOTE: Make sure to check the owner's Terms of Use, many are NOT for Commercial Use, only Personal):

I chose to go with one of my favorite bloggers' kits, "The Fall Collection" at kevinandamanda.com! Check her out, because she has FREE fonts as well, and they are super cute!

So the first thing that we need to do to get started is to set up a photobucket account. Go to Photobucket.com and set up the FREE account. Once that is set up, you need to make sure to click on "(more options)" see below, and select "1 megabyte file size"

Back in blogger, the very FIRST thing you need to do is to back up your template, to do that, go to "Edit HTML" and click on "Download Full Template". Take that file and make sure you know where it is so that if you need to go back you can.

We need to change our template to Minima, it is an older template, so you will need to go to your "Edit HTML" page, and click on "Select Layout Template", then you will see it :) When you click on "Save Template", it may or may not ask you if you wish to keep your widgets, if it does, keep them, unless you want to loose everything on your sidebars.

Google Webmaster Tools is a MUST have if you are trying to understand and improve your search ability on the web.  It allows you to explore and see what Google sees when it crawls your site.  You can sign up for a free account here:  https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

The first thing you need to do is to add your site or blog, you will see this on the homepage after you login.

Once you have set this up, your dashboard will look something like this.  Although, you may find it to be pretty bare because you just set up.  Now just explore :)  It is pretty self explanatory.  **Don't worry if you don't see much info yet, Webmaster Tools is not like Analytics, where it is updating constantly.

A few things to do and pay attention to in Webmaster Tools:

1.  Submit a Sitemap for your blog.  Sitemaps are not quite the same in a blog as they are on a website, websites have tons of pages with different content.  On a blog, your primary information consists of posts, so you need to submit your RSS/Post feed as a Sitemap.

To do this you need to go to the "Your site on the web" section of the sidebar in your webmaster tools, then you need to click on "Subscriber stats", then you will see something like this:
Click on "Yes, please!"
If it says "No data available", either you don't have any subscribers yet (if that is the case, go subscribe to your own feed), or Google has not gather the data yet (most likely if you just set up.... so just keep checking back, it will show up in a week or so).

2.  Pay attention to your "Search queries" section.  This gives you some fabulous information!  It shows you where you are in the searches and how people are finding you.  Here is a break down of what the table means (in Google's words):
  • Queries: The total number of Google Web Search queries that returned pages from your site results over the given period. (These numbers can be rounded, and may not be exact.)
  • Query: A list of the top search queries that returned pages from your site.
  • Impressions: The number of times pages from your site were viewed in search results, and the percentage increase/decrease in the daily average impressions compared to the previous period. (The number of days per period defaults to 30, but you can change it at any time.)
  • Clicks: The number of times your site's listing was clicked in search results for a particular query, and the percentage increase/decrease in the average daily clicks compared to the previous period.
  • CTR (clickthrough rate): The percentage of impressions that resulted in a click to your site, and the percentage increase/decrease in the daily average CTR compared to the previous period.
  • Avg. position: The average position of your site on the search results page for that query, and the change compared to the previous period. Green indicates that your site is climbing in search results.
 3.  Links to your site.  I am going to do a whole other post on this subject because it is so important, but the number and quality of links that link to your site are vital.

4.  The Keywords section is really nice, because it shows you what google sees.  If the keywords that are showing up are not the keywords that you want your blog to be associated under, you need to work on including the keywords that you want in your posts.

If you have not read my article on Meta Tags, then you should :)  It really helps google to find relevant keywords.

The last thing that you can and should do to improve your keywords is to make sure to add "Labels" to your posts.

If you have any questions about Webmaster Tools, feel free to ask, or there are some really helpful links in the little yellow box on each page :)

I just added today a Custom Blog Designer Directory!  I know that not everyone is on there, actually not even close!  I just don't have time at the moment to hunt you all down :)  So please email me with a link to your button if you are not listed.  Right now, I am only accepting buttons.  Oh, and I am ONLY listing Custom Blog Designers, so please no other websites.

Thanks!!

PS.  I would really appreciate if you would return the favor and grab either one of my buttons on my sidebar, but it is not required if you really don't want to :)

I have to kick off color week with Adobe Kuler!  It is amazing, if you have never used it, or another program like it, you are in for a treat.

If you are anything like me, I get stuck on color, for some reason I gravitate back to the same color schemes over and over.  It is not like I mean to either, I think it is just that I know what I like and not meaning to I go back to the same schemes to often (for me it is Brown, Turquoise, and Pink...).  I don't think that all of my clients like want the same colors, so when I get stuck, Adobe Kuler is the best!  It really helps me explore lots of color options with out overdoing the default swatches in Illustrator and Photoshop.

Adobe Kuler is free and super easy, sign up for an account and just play around with it.  I chose one color as my base color (#FF6B7D, the color shown in the center of each scheme), and look at all the fun color schemes that I was able to come up with.  Below each color scheme is the description of the color scheme(the definitions are from Wikipedia).

Analogous Colors are colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. Some examples are green, yellow green, and yellow or red, orange and yellow. Analogous color schemes are often found in nature and are pleasing to the eye. The combination of these colors give a bright and cheery effect in the area, and are able to accommodate many changing moods. When using the analogous color scheme, one should make sure there is one hue as the main color.

A Monochromatic color scheme consists of different values (tints and shades) of one single color. These color schemes are easy to get right and can be very effective, soothing and authoritative. They do, however, lack the diversity of hues found in other color schemes and are less vibrant.

A Triad color scheme is 3 colors of equidistant distribution on the color wheel are used, e.g., red, blue, and yellow.

Complementary colors are colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, such as blue and orange, red and green, purple and yellow. Complementary color schemes have a more energetic feel
The high contrast between the colors creates a vibrant look, especially when used at full saturation. Complementary colors can be tricky to use in large doses.

Compound

Shades

Isn't that fun?!?!  My favorite scheme with this color ended up being Complementary.

I love handwriting fonts, so naturally, I would have another handwriting font site to share!  Ellie and Ivy are the 2 that are behind "Sugar Frog Font", so give them some comment love and for all their hard work and making these fonts available to use for free.  They do offer them free for Commercial use, as long as you give them credit, but just check out their Terms of Use on the top of their website, and have fun using these fonts in your Custom Blog Designs!

Sugar Frog Fonts

I am really excited about today's font website, I love Amanda's fonts.  She offers free handwriting fonts and Scrapbooking fonts.  Check out the links below.

I get the cutest handwriting fonts at Fonts for Peas! kevinandamanda.com/fonts I get the cutest scrapbooking fonts at Free Scrapbook Fonts! kevinandamanda.com/fonts

So I took a long shot and emailed Amanda, because I wanted to ask her a few questions about her fonts and how she got into making fonts.  I was so thrilled when she got back to me and answered my questions, so I hope you enjoy my mini interview with Amanda that is a mix of answers she gave me and some from her website.

How did you get into making fonts and what software do you use?
I have always loved handwriting. The first computer disc I ever bought was a disc with 300 handwriting fonts. It was $20, and I saved my babysitting money for weeks to buy it! Once I learned there was a program where you could *make your own* handwriting fonts, I knew I had to do it. I had always wanted my handwriting as a font. I started asking everyone I knew to write their alphabet for me so I could turn it into a font. But that wasn’t enough- I wanted more! :) I posted on the message board “Two Peas in a Bucket” asking people to send me their handwriting and I would send them a font back for free. I got so many wonderful samples, I knew I had to share the fonts I’d made with others who loved fonts just as much as I did. I created the site “Fonts for Peas” as a way to share those fonts back. I still love making and sharing these fonts freely today!

Here's a link to the software I use, Font Creator Pro:  http://www.high-logic.com/visit/472542.html

What was the first font you made?
The first font I ever made was my handwriting:  http://kevinandamanda.com/fonts/fontsforpeas/amandas-hand/

Did you have any formal training in making fonts or in design?
Because of the webpage, I get asked a lot about my education background or what I do for a living. I went to a private grammar school, I was home schooled in high school, and then I went to community college for 2 years and then I got married! :) Shortly after we first got married I started working in a scrapbook store and taught classes for several years. Right now I'm doing a little photography (and would like to do more!), but mostly just enjoying being a stay at home wife. :) I've never had any formal training in computers / web design / photography, etc. Most of what I've learned is just by trial and error. :)

What is your favorite font (yours or not yours), if you HAD to pick one?
I don't know if I could pick just one, but here are a few of my favs! :)  http://kevinandamanda.com/fonts/fontsforpeas/tag/favs/
