In reality, a normal human being to a height of about 7-8 heads. But in the manga, its proportions are different.

Chibi

The chibis are a height of 3 heads. In reality, it is obviously not such proportions. This is why we call these chibi characters or SD (super deformed).

Child

Babies approximately 1 year have a height of 4 heads.
In the manga, this proportion corresponds to an 8 year old child.
At this age, the female characters have not chest and hips are very thin and the legs.
These proportions are used to represent Kawaii Loli and characters like in the manga Lucky Star.

Preteenager

Children 5 years make a height of 5 heads. In the manga this corresponds to a teenager from 12 to 16 years.
At this age, body shapes begin to change showing a chest early in female characters.
This kind of proportions are used in cute manga like K-on.

Teenager and young adult

Children 8 years make a height of 6 heads in reality. But in a manga, this corresponds to a figure between 16 and 30 years. The chest is fully formed, hips and legs are wider. These proportions are the most used in the manga. Many manga like Love Hina, School Rumble, Negima, etc ... use them to their heroes.

Adult

In reality, teens and young adults are a height of 7 heads, but in the manga it is the girth of a normal adult.

There are many other possible proportions as the heights of 8 heads body, but they are only used in manga realistic style.

In the manga, the hair is as important as the eyes. This is what will allow readers to differentiate your characters. This is why it is important to realize a different haircut for each of your characters.

The hair must follow the contours of the skull.
Hair fit the skull like a helmet.

When hair is short, the distance between the hair of the head is reduced, in contrast to long hair.

how to proceed

Step n°1
Click for larger image

First, define the hairline.
To do this, set a point (red) which all hair
leave (called vortex too).

Step n°2

We now define the direction must take the hair (red arrows) from the vortex.

Step n°3
Click for larger image

No matter where you start, what is important is that the hair follows the direction of the red arrows.

When you draw hair, you should always draw lines against you, starting from the top of the sheet against the bottom. For this, please turn much your sheet.

The ends of the hair strands are still very sharp and very thin.

Give volume to your hair

To make the hair appear more real, it is important to give it volume by adding reflections.

Start by sketching the contours of the skull, and then sketch the hair as we did before.

Color your hair with frames if you have black or making very fine lines.

Some examples:

The hair of this girl
a stiff curly hair mixture

The hair of this girl are cut into long strands that go in all directions. this gives and a sense of movement.

To give an effect of "wind in the hair" must be defined with the wind and wicks draw after this.

In this tutorial, we will study how to draw the head of a man and a woman in a manga style.

Click on images to enlarge them

Step 1

Start by drawing a circle representing the skull.

Step 2

Draw a cross whose intersection is located approximately 2/3 of the circle.

Step 3

Let's position on the horizontal axis both eyes leaving enough room to place a third in the middle.

Step 4

When we are drawing, we used to measure the proportions of the body with eyes. The total length of a face is approximately 5 eyes. The upper face is 2 eyes and the lower part (purple).

Woman: The women jaw (red) is rounded and the chin is pointed.
Man: While the jaw (red) and the man chin are more square.

Step 5

The ears are positioned between the eyes and mouth.
The mouth is in the middle of the lower face (orange).
The nose is positioned on the vertical axis (green).

Step 6

The neck width is equal to the distance between the pupils. However, the man's neck is slightly larger than that of women.

Step 7

A small distance separates the hair of the head.
This may depend on the volume and length of hair.

Step 8

You just have to clear your construction lines and your character is ready.

You can customize your characters in their adding accessories such as glasses.
